Melies is an aggregator-style AI film studio: it wires together a large catalogue of third-party image and video models (Flux, Seedream, Nano Banana, GPT Image, Veo 3.1, Sora 2 Pro, Kling V3/O3 4K, Seedance 2.5, MiniMax H3, WAN, LTX, PixVerse, Vidu) behind one credit wallet, and adds the production furniture around them: a screenwriting workspace that imports FDX/Fountain/TXT, a screenplay-to-storyboard tool that boards a script frame by frame with a cost attached, a character system (150+ ready-made AI actors plus custom actors trained from a photo, character sheets, reusable references), voice/music/SFX/lip-sync tools, and a timeline editor where clips get trimmed, audio mixed and the cut exported. Paid plans run $7 / $39 / $79 per month billed yearly for 500 / 5,000 / 15,000 credits a month; the editor and timeline themselves cost nothing, credits are spent only on generation. There is also a CLI and agent integration. Episodic support is published only at the writing layer — "pilots and episodic stories" — not as season or multi-episode production management.

Pros

  • The widest published model catalogue of the two: front-line video models including Veo 3.1, Sora 2 Pro, Kling V3/O3 4K and Seedance 2.5 (changelog v2.25.0 lists Seedance 2.5 as 4 to 30 second clips with synchronized audio).
  • It closes the loop in one place — the site states "Melies includes a timeline editor so the final edit happens in the same tool where you generated the footage", and offers a complete project ZIP export.
  • Character consistency is a first-class system, not an afterthought: 150+ ready-made actors, custom actors from a single photo, character sheets, and references automatically carried into generation.
  • Costs are legible before you spend: every model has a stated credit cost, the CLI has a dry run that previews prompt, model and cost, and the storyboard tool boards a script "frame by frame" with cost attached.
  • Editing is free — the docs state "Using the editor, arranging scenes, and working with the timeline is free", credits are only consumed on generation.
  • Audio is covered end to end in-platform: voiceover, music, sound effects, subtitles and a dedicated lip-sync tool.

Cons

  • No free plan appears on the pricing page — the three listed tiers are all paid, and any free-credit grant is not published there (the screenwriting page does state that free accounts get the complete screenwriting workspace, with AI writing and image generation using credits).
  • Per-second video cost is high at list price: Seedance 2.5 is 50 credits per second at 720p, and the Pro plan's 5,000 monthly credits therefore cover roughly 100 seconds of 720p Seedance; Veo 3.1 is 400 credits per 4-8 second clip.
  • The site does not publish an automatic script-to-shot-list breakdown that generates video shot by shot — the storyboard tool boards frames, and the short-film-maker page lists "Separate single-clip generation from a true multi-scene short-film workflow" as a pre-launch item.
  • No one-click whole-episode assembly is published; the timeline is a manual edit.
  • The voice generator page lists only five built-in voices (Alice, Brian, Charlotte, George, Laura), and lip sync is a separate tool rather than an automatic per-line assignment.
  • Several tool pages carry "Before public launch" roadmap items (documenting model, credit cost, duration, resolution and reference limits; publishing reference-to-video tests), so some specs are not yet public.
  • Credit rollover is listed as an FAQ question on the pricing page but the answer is not published in the page body.
