Katalist (KatalistAI, Inc., 548 Market St, San Francisco) is a script-to-storyboard-to-video tool whose current positioning is squarely performance marketing rather than narrative drama. Its own FAQ describes the flow as: "Start with a script: write it in Katalist or import your own. Katalist breaks it into shots and generates a storyboard with consistent characters and scenes. From there you refine each shot, adjust framing and shot types, regenerate anything you don't like, turn your shots into video, and export for your channels." The headline differentiator is the Product Swap Engine — upload a reference photo and Katalist replaces the item in an existing winning creative "keeping its exact shape, label, and colors while matching the scene", so "one winning creative can be rerun with any product in your catalog, no reshoots". Character consistency works by casting from a reference once, and characters or just their voices can be replaced later; lip-sync and AI voiceover are included on every paid tier. Pricing is public and low-entry: Essential $19/mo, Pro $39/mo, Unlimited $99/mo, Enterprise custom, with a 7-day free trial and free credits on signup. Video models named on the pricing page are Runway Gen-4, Google Veo 3.2, Kling Pro & Standard, Pixverse v4, WAN-I2V, Sora 2 and LTX-2.

Pros

  • Very low entry price with a real free path — Essential is $19/mo, every tier has a "7 day free trial" with "unlimited generations", and the FAQ says "Sign up free and get free credits to generate your first storyboard, no credit card needed."
  • The video model lineup is named openly on the pricing page and includes current frontier engines (Google Veo 3.2, Sora 2, Runway Gen-4), and the same list is available on every paid tier including the $19 one.
  • The Product Swap Engine is a genuinely distinct capability: re-running one proven creative across a whole SKU catalogue from reference photos, with no reshoot.
  • Reference-based character casting plus the ability to replace a character or only their voice later, and to re-lip-sync for a new market.
  • Storyboard-layer craft controls are unusually specific for this price point — posing, generative fill, and explicit camera angles (above, below, straight-on, eye-level), plus shooting-board and PDF export for people who still hand boards to a crew.

Cons

  • The site does not publish any episode, season or series capability — the unit of work on the pricing page is the "project" and "200+ frames / project", not episodes.
  • Katalist's own product page lists "AI powered Timeline editor" under a "Coming soon!" label, so in-app timeline editing is stated as not yet shipped.
  • What one "video credit" buys (seconds of video, or a clip) is not published anywhere on the pricing page, so cost per second of finished video cannot be computed from official figures.
  • Custom characters are capped by plan: "1 custom character" on Essential, "10 custom characters" on Pro, unlimited only on Unlimited and Enterprise.
  • Projects are capped by plan: "5 project limit" on Essential, "20 project limit" on Pro.
  • The annual-billing cards list only image credits per month and do not list video credits, and the annual Essential card shows "$29.00 / month" against the monthly card's "$19.00" — as published on the pricing page.
  • Video export is listed explicitly only in the Enterprise column ("ZIP, PPT, Video export"); the lower tiers list ZIP & .ppt export (Unlimited) without an explicit video-export line.
